The purpose of this course blog is to serve as a practice exercise in EDM 510. The question of the week is "Should the school year be all year round, or should the school day be longer than the average 7 to 8 hrs."? Explain why.

  1. Students should go school all year round and the average school day needs to be longer. I know most teachers would disagree, but I think students need to be in school more. The U.S.A. is falling more behind other countries when it comes to education each and every year. If students spend more time in school, they probably will spend less time in front of video games.

  2. I don't think we should go to school all year round. I think the reason we are falling behind is not because of how many hours we spend in school but what and how we teach. We need to take a look at those schools that are ahead of us and see what they are doing. We should not let our children spend more time in school, we should let them be children and enjoy life a little more instead of pushing them so hard.

  3. I would have to disagree. If one looks at other countries around the world, they are spending way more time in a classroom setting than we are and some are all year round. Also, I think the students are "being children" too much and not focusing on their studies enough. They are too busy running around playing video games, watching TV, and texting for example. They need more structure. However, I do have to agree that long days would not solve the issue. The curriculum needs to be overhauled all together.

  4. I don't think we need to go year round. I think that experiences out of of school are just as important as in school. Do you know that most home schooled children complete their assignments in half a school day. With smaller class size and fewer disruptions students could learn more.

  5. I think that a year round school year would be most beneficial for students success. Students and teachers still would get the same time off but it would be spaced throughout the entire year. I believe that the United States low standing for education has to do in part because we are one of the only countries to not have year round school.

  6. I do not think the school year should be all year round, nor do I think it should be longer than it is now. Teachers need a mental and physical break during the summer. Students also need time off to have vacations and extended down time.

  7. School all year round does not mean that teachers and students do not get the opportunity to get time off for individuals who seem to not understand the concept. Students will still get time to relax along with teachers.

  8. I do not think that school should be year round. I am all for making our schools better academically. However, I do not think that MORE school is the answer. I think BETTER school is the answer. Throughout my experience in education I have been in the worst of schools and the best of schools. More time for the students who are in schools which are failing will not make our country go forward in education. I think more attention needs to be focused on teachers who are willing to stay on the edge of education, who are willing to grow, and systems who are willing to support them. This will probably get some negative comments, but I think doing away with the tenure law would be a better more effective step. Teachers should be hired and be allowed to stay in education because they are good at what they do. I know this opens a whole other can of worms such as "how do you evaluate?", but I think the effort it would take to answer such questions is worth the outcome of quality teachers in the classroom.

  9. Also, I believe that parents play a much bigger role in how long a student spends in front of the TV or playing video games. I do not want the government putting my child in school longer so that they can protect them. That is my job.

  10. I think making the school year round would help student learning. There would be no time to forget what they have learned. Having a longer school day would only work if there were more breaks throughout the day. Students need short breaks between lengths of instruction in order to commit it to their memory. If not, they may not significantly learn anything. It's the same as cramming all night then blanking during the test the next day.

  11. Oh wow, I think that the kids and the teachers need the summer vacation! I say that only because sometimes adults get burnt out think about the kids. I do not think the day needs to get any longer either. I think the best solution would be to take some of the extra curricular activities away during the week. That is not saying they never get it but just limit the amounts.
